Can You Hear Me Major Tom?
Moon is a independent British film and is the first film from director Duncan Jones, who is none other then David Bowie's son. The film starts off telling the story a new energy source on the moon that is saving the planet. You then cut to Sam Bell, played by Sam Rockwell, who is stationed alone on the dark side of the moon harvesting helium-3 from lunar rocks. Sam is nearing the end of his three year contract, all of which has been spent without direct radio contact with earth. All his messages are received prerecorded, the only person he has to talk to is GERTY a robot voiced by Kevin Spacey.
This is a great psychological thriller. It borrows many themes developed by most 70's space or futuristic movies. There is the conflict between man and machine like in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and a sort of journey of self discovery and perseverance like in Silent Running. The set and camera work really pay homage to those early science fiction movies. Right off the bat you can tell that everything is not what is seems and there must be more to the story. You can see small little glitches in what is suppose to be routine. Sam starts to notice these as well, within a half an hour of the film you discover just what that glitch is and just what Sam's purpose is. This is a great simple smart easy watching movie and recommended to any sci-fi fan.
Here is the trailer.
