Thrifty #8

Argus C3 Standard

Today I found a Argus C3 Standard 35mm camera at the Goodwill. This thing immediately popped out sitting on the shelf with all the other cameras. Its an amazingly simple clean sharp looking camera. Its also a simple working camera but with all the knobs and buttons it looks like it can do a whole lot more. Its very scientific and mechanical looking.

It seems to be in working order but I will not be able to tell for sure until I shoot a roll of film. I also think there may be a lens missing, I'm not sure though. It may be that the lens cover is missing which is just a flat piece of glass that protects the actual lens. Looking at other cameras of this kind online there seems to be something at the front of the lens that is missing on this camera. Hopefully its just a lens cover and not something that is needed to focus. If it is I'm sure I could find a replacement lens for this camera online somewhere.

This was sort of the American made mass produced camera and was the most popular camera for a number of years. This camera helped to establish 35mm film as the dominant film in the industry. The camera has some nice heft to it and you can tell it is solidly built and will probably last forever. It is also simple in its construction so if it were to break somehow it would be easy to fix.

I love shooting with film, especially with old cameras like this. It really makes you stop and think about how to set up the shot and what you need to have your camera set at. I think it makes you a better photographer when you are using digital. Even though with digital you can easily set it on auto and get some decent shots. If you know how to set you camera right you can get so much more interesting shots. I think anyone who is interested in learning how to become a great photographer should start out with a standard film camera.

Price for a Argus C3 Standard with case $4.99. More pictures here.
